What is Urushi?

When they called porcelain "china" hundreds of years ago, they also called the 100% natural lacquer Urushi "japan".

Urushi comes from a deciduous tree in Japan which takes 10- 15 years to grow mature enough to extricate the sap. The harvesting season begins in June, when the new leaves first begin to appear. One large Urushi tree can produce only 200 grams or 5.7 oz. of sap - just enough to lacquer 10 Japanese bowls. The trees are then grown another 10-15 years when the process is repeated again. In Japan it is said that "a drop of Urushi is a drop of blood".

Urushi consists of 60-65% Urushiol, 5-7% of gum, 2-3% nitrogen, 0.2% enzymes and 25-30% water and other materials. It is extremely resistant to heat, salt, acid, alkali, but is vulnerable to sunlight, electromagnetic waves and fire (such as that of burning cigarettes). Since Urushi is 100% natural, the black, red, blue, brown and green colors are especially brilliant and most commonly used.
